22 WEEKS ROUND THE WORLD - No.16

GUEST AUTHOR from the Republic of Moldova
EUGENIA ROTARU - Linguata Scoli de Limbi Straine ( Branch Director - Linguata Orhei)

Moldova – officially the Republic of Moldova – is a parliamentary republic.

History
In Antiquity, Moldova’s territory was inhabited by Dacian tribes.
In 1812, in accordance with the Treaty of Bucharest, the Ottoman Empire ceded the eastern half of the Principality of Moldavia to the Russian Empire.
In 1944, the Soviet Army re-established Moldavia as a Soviet region.
Large towns
Chisinau (capital city), Tiraspol, Balti, Ungheni, Orhei.

Moldova is known for its wines and the rich soil that has made the country one of the most productive agricultural regions.
Religion: Eastern Orthodox Christians
Population: 3,383, 323 inhabitants
There is a controversy whether Moldovans and Romanians are the same ethnic group and whether their language is the same.
Moldovans are very proud people, and in my opinion, they should be of their country and culture. Eugenia’s message will help you understand why the are proud and happy:

“Moldova- is the best country to live, to learn, to make friends, to find opportunities, and grow! Moldova, due to some facts, is a country which being independent for about 20 years has got its typical political governing style. (It is the most discussed topic nowadays because of the Referendum that takes place on September 5, 2010 and supports the idea of changing present Constitution adopted on July 29, 1994).
The capital of the Republic of Moldova is Chisinau and the present position of the president has been vacant for about a year. The official language of the country is Romanian, people living here are called Moldovan. The country is special because of its natural beauty and ancient places. Orheiul Vechi, Saharna, Tipova, Hincu monasteries lay in the most picturesque landscapes ever. People are hard-working and sociable. Zdob si Zdub, Dan Balan, O-Zone, Nelly Ciobanu - are those who sing for us and express our Moldovan matter. Traditional food is usually served on Sundays when people get together for family meals, they serve zeama- chicken broth with noodles and mamaliga- some kind of corn porridge, with mujdei- garlic sauce, some pickles, some sour cream and branza- a special sort of cow/ sheep cheese, and of course, some fried meat and a glass of red tasty home-made wine. Pofta buna- bone appetite! And welcome to our country”!

BRAIN TEASERS - HOW SMART ARE YOU?

Let your mind go and solve the riddles below:

1. I do not have any special powers, but I can predict the score of any
football game before it begins. How can I do this?

2. Jimmy's mother had 4 children. She named the first Monday.
Named the second Tuesday. The third is named Wednesday.
What is the name of the fourth child?

3. You are driving a bus. At the first stop, 2 women get on. The second stop, 3 men get
on and 1 woman gets off. Third stop, 3 kids and their mom get on, and a man gets off.
The bus is grey, and it is raining outside. What color is the bus drivers hair?

4. Before Mt. Everest was discovered, what was the highest mountain in the world?

5. I left my campsite and hiked south for 3 miles. Turned east and hiked for 3 miles.
Then turned north and hiked for 3 miles, at which time I came upon a bear inside my
    tent eating my food!
   What color was the bear?

6. A man lives on the fifteenth floor of an apartment building. Every morning he takes the
elevator down to the lobby and leaves the building. In the evening, he gets into the
elevator, and, if there is someone else in the elevator, or if it was raining that day, he
goes back to his floor directly. Otherwise, he goes to the tenth floor and walks up five
flights of stairs to his apartment.

7. A man is looking at a photograph of someone. His friend asks who it is. The man
replies, "Brothers and sisters, I have none. But that man's father is my father's son."
    Who was in the photograph?

8. What is full of holes but can still hold water?

9. How can you make seven even?

The answers will be published on September 1.

2. Jimmy.
3. Whatever color your hair is! Remember, you are the bus driver!
4. Mt. Everest. It was still the highest in the world - it just hadn't been discovered yet!

6. The man is a dwarf. He can't reach the upper elevator buttons, but he can ask people to push them for him. He can also push them with his umbrella.
7. His son.

AN OPEN LETTER TO PARENTS

A classic children's story narrated by a Hollywood actress

How much time do you spend with your child? Can you tell a story? If you don't, learn from a great actress! You don't need drama classes to perform in front of your kid. Just enjoy the moment, be happy and give happiness! Your child will probably prefer your show to any TV cartoon or computer game.
